SIP Calculator
Estimate the future value of a monthly Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) with monthly compounding — see your total invested, estimated returns and likely maturity value in seconds.
What is a SIP calculator?
A SIP calculator estimates how much a Systematic Investment Plan could grow to over time. A systematic investment plan is a way of investing a fixed amount in a mutual fund at regular intervals — usually monthly — so you build a corpus steadily instead of trying to time the market. This free SIP calculator takes three inputs: your monthly investment, the expected annual return and the number of years.
It then applies the standard future-value-of-annuity formula with monthly compounding to show your total invested, the estimated returns and the maturity value. Because returns from market-linked investments are never fixed, the annual rate you enter is an assumption — the tool is a planning aid, not a guarantee. It runs entirely on JavaScript in your browser, so results appear instantly and nothing is uploaded, making it easy to compare different amounts, returns and timeframes before you invest a rupee.
How to use
- Enter the amount you invest every month.
- Set an assumed annual return percentage.
- Enter the number of years, then click Calculate SIP to see total invested, estimated returns and maturity value.
How SIP future value is calculated
FV = P × (((1+i)^n − 1) / i) × (1+i) i = annual return ÷ 12, n = years × 12
Each monthly instalment is assumed to be invested at the start of the month (annuity due), so your money begins compounding immediately.
Example
With ₹5,000 a month at an assumed 12% annual return over 10 years, click Calculate SIP to see a total invested of ₹6,00,000, estimated returns of about ₹5,61,695 and a total value of roughly ₹11,61,695. Try longer horizons and compounding does more of the work: the same ₹5,000 a month for 20 years invests ₹12,00,000 but grows to nearly ₹49.96 lakh.
Who is a SIP calculator for?
A SIP calculator is useful for almost any investor who invests a fixed amount each month, but it suits a few groups especially well.
- Students and young adults: start a small monthly SIP early — even ₹500 or ₹1,000 — and use the calculator to see how much time and compounding, rather than a large amount, grow the corpus.
- Couples: plan a joint goal such as a down payment or a child's education by combining two monthly SIPs and comparing the projected maturity value.
- Salaried professionals: set up a monthly amount that fits a budget, then compare a longer horizon to see the difference in returns.
- Retirees: model a systematic withdrawal-style goal to judge whether a steady monthly figure is sustainable in retirement.
SIP calculator by years
The table below shows how a monthly SIP of ₹5,000 at an assumed 12% annual return grows over time. Compounding does most of the work in the later years.
| Years | Total invested | Estimated value |
|---|---|---|
| 5 | ₹3,00,000 | ₹4,12,432 |
| 10 | ₹6,00,000 | ₹11,61,695 |
| 15 | ₹9,00,000 | ₹25,22,880 |
| 20 | ₹12,00,000 | ₹49,95,740 |
Common use cases
- Long-term goals: build a corpus for retirement, a child’s education or a big purchase.
- Compare scenarios: see how changing the monthly amount, expected return or years changes the maturity value.
- Step-up planning: work out how raising your monthly SIP each year could speed up the goal.
- Reverse planning: find the monthly amount needed to reach a target corpus in a set time.
Pro tips
- Compounding rewards time: doubling the tenure can more than double the final corpus.
- Use a realistic return: 10-12% is common for diversified equity funds, but markets fluctuate.
- Returns are not guaranteed: treat the figure as an estimate for planning, not a promise.
- Know the assumptions: this tool compounds monthly and invests at the start of each month (annuity due).
FAQ
What is a SIP?
A Systematic Investment Plan invests a fixed amount in a mutual fund every month, so you build wealth steadily and benefit from compounding over time.
What is a SIP calculator?
A tool that estimates how much a monthly SIP could grow to, given your monthly amount, an expected annual return and a number of years.
How is the future value calculated?
FV = P × (((1+i)^n − 1) / i) × (1+i), with monthly compounding. A ₹5,000 monthly SIP at 12% for 10 years matures to roughly ₹11.6 lakh.
Are returns guaranteed?
No. The return you enter is an assumption. Market-linked investments fluctuate; this is a planning tool, not a promise or financial advice.
How much should I invest monthly?
It depends on your goal and horizon. Use the calculator to see the future value for different amounts, then pick what fits your budget.
What return should I assume?
Many people plan with 10-12% for diversified equity funds, but your actual return will vary with the market over time.
Is a 10-year SIP enough?
It depends on the goal. Longer periods let compounding work harder, so a 15-20 year horizon usually builds a far larger corpus.
Does the timing of the instalment matter?
Yes. This tool assumes each instalment is invested at the start of the month (annuity due), so the money starts compounding immediately.
Is this SIP calculator free?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser and no data is uploaded anywhere.
Can I use it to plan a step-up SIP?
Yes. Enter a planned increase and horizon to compare scenarios, although this tool invests a fixed monthly amount.
