FD Calculator
Find the maturity amount and interest earned on a fixed deposit — compare rates, tenures and compounding frequencies to plan a safe, predictable return.
What is an FD calculator?
A FD calculator (fixed deposit calculator) works out how much a fixed deposit will be worth at maturity and how much interest it earns. A fixed deposit is a bank investment where you lock in a lump sum for a set tenure at a fixed interest rate, and the interest compounds at the chosen frequency — commonly quarterly in India. This free FD calculator takes four inputs: principal, annual rate, tenure in years and compounding frequency.
It then applies the compound interest formula to show the maturity amount and total interest earned. Because the rate and tenure are fixed, an FD is a low-risk, predictable investment, and this calculator lets you compare different amounts, tenures and compounding options before you commit. The calculation runs entirely on JavaScript in your browser, so results are instant and nothing is uploaded anywhere.
How to use
- Enter the principal amount you are depositing.
- Set the annual interest rate offered by the bank.
- Enter the tenure and choose the compounding frequency.
- Click Calculate FD to see the maturity amount and interest earned.
How FD maturity is calculated
Maturity = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t) n = 4 for quarterly compounding
The calculation compounds interest on both the principal and previously accrued interest, so the maturity amount grows faster than simple interest.
Example
With the defaults — ₹1,00,000 as principal, 6.5% annual rate, 5 years and quarterly compounding — click Calculate FD. The maturity amount is ₹1,38,041.98 and the interest earned is ₹38,041.98 (about ₹1.38 lakh and ₹38 thousand respectively). Now switch compounding from quarterly to monthly and watch the maturity figure edge up slightly for the same rate and tenure.
Who is this FD calculator for?
This FD calculator answers one question for savers in India: what will my fixed deposit be worth at maturity? Whether you are just starting to save or planning a retirement corpus, the calculator (and this site) is made for several kinds of savers.
- Students and young adults: you are often stashing a few thousand rupees from a stipend or your first salary. Enter the amount and tenure you can lock away to see an exact FD chart of what it becomes — a safe, low-risk start that protects your principal.
- Couples: planning a joint savings goal such as a wedding, a car or a home down payment. A fixed deposit for couples lets you forecast the maturity together, so you can pick the tenure that reaches your target on schedule.
- Salaried professionals: comparing bank FD rates and tenures before you commit a large chunk of savings. The calculator builds a real FD table for the rate you are offered, so you can choose the best risk-free return.
- Retirees: most retirees prefer a predictable, bank-guaranteed income stream, and a fixed deposit is a common choice because the interest is locked when you open it. The calculator shows exactly what a retiree can expect for a chosen principal and tenure.
FD maturity chart by amount and tenure
The table below shows how a fixed deposit grows at 6.5% annual interest with standard quarterly compounding, so you can read the FD chart and FD table for the amount and tenure you have in mind. The maturity amount uses the compound interest formula, and interest earned is maturity minus the principal.
| Principal (₹) | Tenure (years) | Maturity amount | Interest earned |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹50,000 | 3 | ₹60,670.38 | ₹10,670.38 |
| ₹1,00,000 | 3 | ₹1,21,340.76 | ₹21,340.76 |
| ₹1,00,000 | 5 | ₹1,38,041.98 | ₹38,041.98 |
| ₹2,50,000 | 1 | ₹2,66,650.40 | ₹16,650.40 |
| ₹5,00,000 | 10 | ₹9,52,779.38 | ₹4,52,779.38 |
| ₹10,00,000 | 5 | ₹13,80,419.77 | ₹3,80,419.77 |
Common use cases
- Compare FD schemes: see how different banks’ rates and tenures change the maturity amount.
- Plan a safe deposit: decide how much to lock away for a known, predictable return.
- Senior citizens: compare standard and preferential senior-citizen rates.
- Test compounding: see whether monthly, quarterly or annual compounding suits a tenure.
Pro tips
- More compounding is usually better: monthly or daily yields a slightly higher maturity for the same rate and tenure.
- Quarterly is the default: it matches common Indian bank practice, but you can change it.
- Longer tenures often pay more: but your money stays locked for the whole term.
- This is a cumulative FD: interest is reinvested and paid at maturity rather than periodically.
FAQ
What is a fixed deposit?
An FD is a lump-sum bank deposit with a set tenure and fixed interest rate. The interest compounds at the chosen frequency, and you get a known maturity amount.
What is an FD calculator?
A tool that estimates the maturity amount and interest earned on a fixed deposit, given the principal, annual rate, tenure and compounding frequency.
How is the maturity amount calculated?
Maturity = P × (1 + r/n)^(n×t). For ₹1,00,000 at 6.5% quarterly for 5 years, the maturity is ₹1,38,041.98.
Which compounding frequency is standard for FDs?
Indian banks commonly compound interest quarterly, which is selected by default here. You can also pick annual, semiannual, monthly or daily.
Does compounding frequency change the result?
Yes. More frequent compounding (monthly, daily) yields slightly higher maturity for the same rate and tenure.
Is FD interest taxable?
In India, FD interest is added to your income and taxed at your slab rate, so factor in tax when estimating your real take-home return.
What's the difference between cumulative and non-cumulative FD?
A cumulative FD pays interest at maturity; a non-cumulative (payout) FD pays it periodically, which usually lowers the total interest.
Do senior citizens get a higher rate?
Many banks offer a preferential premium of around 0.5% for senior citizens, which raises the maturity amount.
Is an FD safe?
Generally low-risk. Bank FDs are covered by deposit insurance up to the applicable limit, and the interest rate is fixed from the start.
Is this FD calculator free?
Yes. It runs entirely in your browser and no data is uploaded anywhere.
