What is return on investment (ROI)?
Return on investment, or ROI, measures how profitable an investment was by comparing the gain it produced against what it cost. The basic formula is ROI = (final value - invested amount) ÷ invested amount × 100. It is a fast, intuitive way to judge whether a deal made or lost money, and it works for anything — stocks, property, a marketing campaign or a business venture. The limitation is that the simple figure ignores time: a 50% return earned over one year is very different from a 50% return over ten. That is why this tool also reports the annualized return, called the compound annual growth rate (CAGR), which expresses the yearly rate that would produce the same result. The calculator returns the total gain (or loss) in currency, the ROI as a percentage, and the CAGR, so you can compare opportunities fairly regardless of how long each was held. Everything is calculated locally in your browser.
Example
Enter an invested amount of 100,000, a final value of 150,000 and a period of 4 years. The tool returns a gain of 50,000, an ROI of 50% and a CAGR of about 10.67% a year.
Who is this ROI calculator for?
Return on investment is a universal number, but it helps different people in different ways. This ROI calculator is built for students, couples, professionals and retirees who want a fast, honest read on whether an investment is worth it.
- Students and young adults: When you are just starting to invest, even a small portfolio needs a clear measure. Working out the ROI on a stock, a fixed deposit or a first SIP tells you whether your money is actually working.
- Couples: Planning a joint purchase like a home, a car or a shared investment is easier when you can compare returns. This calculator lets a couple see the gain, the ROI and the annualized return side by side before they commit.
- Salaried professionals: Comparing a mutual fund, an equity holding or a side project with money you have worked hard for demands the annualized number, not just the headline ROI. Professionals use it to judge opportunities held for different lengths of time.
- Retirees: On a fixed income, retirees need to know what their savings really earn. The ROI and CAGR here help them judge a pension pot, a bond or a rental against inflation and their own plans.
Return on investment chart (based on ₹1,00,000 invested)
This table works through a range of outcomes for an initial investment of ₹1,00,000 held for 3 years. The gain is the total profit, and the CAGR shows the same result as an average annual rate.
| Final value | Total gain | ROI | CAGR (3 yrs) |
|---|---|---|---|
| ₹1,20,000 | ₹20,000 | 20% | 6.27% |
| ₹1,50,000 | ₹50,000 | 50% | 14.47% |
| ₹1,80,000 | ₹80,000 | 80% | 21.64% |
| ₹2,00,000 | ₹1,00,000 | 100% | 25.99% |
| ₹2,50,000 | ₹1,50,000 | 150% | 35.72% |
Gain = final value − invested amount; ROI = gain ÷ invested × 100; CAGR = ((final ÷ invested)^(1/years) − 1) × 100.
Common use cases
- Comparing the profitability of two investments that were held for different lengths of time.
- Evaluating a real estate, stock or business purchase after it is sold.
- Measuring the return on a marketing budget or a capital project.
- Quickly estimating whether a potential deal is worth pursuing before you commit.
Pro tips
- Use CAGR, not the plain ROI, when comparing investments held for different periods.
- Include all costs — fees, commissions and taxes — in the invested amount for an accurate figure.
- A high ROI can come with high risk; consider the risk alongside the return.
- For partly a year, adjust the period to a fraction to get a realistic annualized number.
How to use
- Enter your initial investment.

ROI formulas
Total gain/loss = Final value − Initial investment ROI (%) = (Gain ÷ Initial) × 100 CAGR (%) = ((Final ÷ Initial)^(1/years) − 1) × 100
FAQ
How is ROI calculated?
ROI = ((Final value − Initial investment) ÷ Initial investment) × 100. For example, ₹1,00,000 invested that grows to ₹1,50,000 gives a 50% ROI.
What is CAGR?
CAGR is the compound annual growth rate: (Final ÷ Initial)^(1/years) − 1. It measures the average annual return over the investment period.
Why is my result showing an error?
Initial investment and years must both be greater than zero — division by zero is not allowed. Enter positive values and try again.
Is this calculator free?
Yes. It is free, runs in your browser, and no data is uploaded.
How is ROI calculated?
Subtract the invested amount from the final value, divide by the invested amount and multiply by 100. The result is expressed as a percentage.
What is CAGR?
The compound annual growth rate is the average yearly return that would produce the same final value over the holding period.
Why is annualized ROI important?
It normalises for time, letting you compare a five-year investment with a two-year one on the same basis.
What if the ROI is negative?
A negative ROI means you lost money — the final value was lower than the amount invested.
Can ROI be over 100%?
Yes. If you double your money, the ROI is 100%; triple it and the ROI is 200%.
Does ROI include fees and taxes?
Only if you include them in the numbers you enter. For accuracy, add all costs to the invested amount.
