GPA Calculator
Compute your weighted grade point average on a standard 4.0 scale. List your courses, grades and credit hours.
What is a GPA calculator?
A GPA (grade point average) calculator turns your course grades and credit hours into a single number on the standard 4.0 scale. Each letter grade maps to a grade point — A equals 4.0, A- equals 3.7, B equals 3.0 and so on down to F, which is 0. Your GPA is the credit-weighted average: multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours, add those quality points together, then divide by the total credit hours. That is why a course worth more credits has a bigger effect on your average than a one-credit class. The result is the number colleges, scholarships and academic standing reviews look at. This calculator does the whole thing for you — list your courses, choose each grade, enter the credits and it computes the weighted GPA and shows the working. It is free and runs entirely in your browser.
Example
Take an A in a 3-credit course, a B in a 4-credit course and an A- in a 3-credit course. That gives quality points of 12.0, 12.0 and 11.1, totalling 35.1 across 10 credits, for a GPA of 3.51.
Who is this GPA calculator for?
This GPA calculator is built for students, teachers and anyone working with grades on the standard 4.0 scale — it shows your credit-weighted average and exactly which courses drive it.
- Students: Check where you stand after each semester, see whether your GPA is on target, and work out the quality points you need to reach a goal before college applications.
- Teachers and advisors: Compute a student's credit-weighted GPA quickly for report cards, honour rolls and academic standing reviews.
- College applicants: Compare your cumulative GPA against admission cut-offs and verify what your transcript really works out to on the 4.0 scale.
GPA letter grade scale
This is the 4.0 unweighted GPA scale, with the quality points each grade earns in a 3-credit course (grade point × credit hours).
| Letter grade | Grade points | Quality points (3 credits) |
|---|---|---|
| A | 4.0 | 12.0 |
| A- | 3.7 | 11.1 |
| B | 3.0 | 9.0 |
| C | 2.0 | 6.0 |
| D | 1.0 | 3.0 |
| F | 0.0 | 0.0 |
Recomputed with python3 from the calculator's own grade scale — grade points are each letter's 4.0 value, and quality points are grade point × 3 credit hours.
Common use cases
- Checking where you stand academically after a semester or before applying to college.
- Planning your course load to protect or improve your grade point average.
- Determining eligibility for scholarships, honours programs or academic standing.
- Tracking a cumulative GPA across multiple terms as you progress through school.
Pro tips
- Higher-credit courses move your GPA more, so prioritise strong grades in the ones worth the most credits.
- Know whether your school uses weighted or unweighted, since AP and honours bonuses can push a GPA above 4.0.
- A cumulative GPA is the average across all terms, so improving later semesters helps pull up a weaker start.
- Focus on understanding rather than chasing a number; course rigor and trends matter to colleges too.
How to use
- Choose a letter grade for each course.
- Enter the credit hours for each course.
- Click Calculate GPA to see your weighted grade point average.
FAQ
What is a weighted GPA?
A weighted GPA gives more value to courses with more credit hours. It is the credit-weighted average of your grade points on a 4.0 scale.
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course's grade point by its credit hours, add them together, then divide by the total credit hours.
What GPA scale is used?
The standard 4.0 scale, where A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0.
Is this calculator free?
Yes. It is free, runs in your browser, and no data is uploaded.
How is GPA calculated?
Multiply each course grade point by its credit hours to get quality points, add them up, then divide by the total credit hours.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted scores every course on the same 4.0 scale. Weighted adds a bonus for harder courses, such as AP or honours, allowing a result above 4.0.
What is a good GPA?
It depends on context. On a 4.0 scale a 3.0 is solid, 3.5 is strong, and 3.7 or higher is excellent, though colleges look at rigor and trends too.
How does the 4.0 scale work?
A = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, and so on down to F = 0. Each letter counts as its grade point value.
Do credit hours matter?
Yes. A course with more credits has a larger effect on your GPA because it contributes more quality points.
Can my GPA go above 4.0?
Only with a weighted scale that adds points for AP, honours or IB courses. On a standard unweighted scale, 4.0 is the maximum.
